How we spend our time is always up to us. We can work on our book or binge-watch Netflix. We can go to the gym or we can hit the snooze button. Instead of eating a salad, we may reach for that bag of potato chips. You always have a choice, and although I’ve always known that, it’s become more clear as I embrace writing off the grid.
The Choice to Do Less
The main reason I decided to pull back from social media in mid-April was because I was feeling overwhelmed and, consequently, burnt out. When I started to ramp up my social media engagement, it didn’t take long for progress on my writing projects to wane. Although I was coming back from a running injury, I quickly found any reason not to run. And when I felt short on time, it was easier to fill my lunch bag with potato chips and banana bread than healthy snacks.
I knew then that if I wanted to move forward, and actually make progress on the things I told myself mattered most, I had to make a choice. And that choice was to do less. So, I chose to do less and pull the plug on social media—and, by extension, write off the grid.
The Upside of Doing Less
It’s only been a few weeks since I decided to do less, but I already feel like I’m doing more. Like I mentioned in Monday’s post, I’m either getting in a run or going to the gym (even if it’s just a twenty-minute workout) every day. I’ve put consistently more time in on a writing project that had been stalled for months. And the rewrite of another is moving forward at a good clip, too. I’m packing myself healthier lunches and have found my rhythm again to incorporate intermittent fasting into my day.
Yes, we always have a choice as to how we spend our time. Let the choices we make help us become the best we are capable of becoming.
