The End of the Road

April 6, 2023 by Marcus Leave a Comment

This is a continuation of ‘A Hard Reset‘

Michael threw open the door and walked heavy-footed down the corridor, half a dozen files tucked under his arm. He ignored Derrick—he’d actually forgotten that he was there—and headed towards the elevator. Three hours of being grilled behind closed doors about the Agency’s investigation into the Romero-Denault Affair, and having to dumb down his answers, had him wound up. He appreciated now that there had been twenty feet between him and Neil Sampson, because if he’d been any closer he might have shown the Minister some of his own interrogation techniques.

A Hard Reset

This is a continuation of ‘The Sit-Down‘

“You don’t have to sneak out.”

Michael, seated on the grey sofa, looked up after he’d finished lacing up his shoes. His gaze latched onto Sam, who tightened the belt of the white bathrobe that stopped just about his knees. “That’s not…” He massaged the back of his neck as he stood. “That’s exactly what I was hoping to do, Sam…”

Sam crossed to him and kissed him lightly on the lips. “It was nice to be with you one last time, Michael. I don’t know why you came to me last night, and I’m not going to ask, either.” He offered a faint smile. “You don’t love me. We weren’t together long enough for that. It’s always fun being with you, but your heart…it still belongs to Brian. Give him a chance. It may be cliché to say, but you have something a lot of people would die for. You and Brian have a second chance.” [Read more…] about A Hard Reset

The Sit-Down

interview

This is a continuation of ‘The Inner Circle‘

“Is this really necessary?” Michael asked as the male makeup artist brushed his forehead.

“It’ll reduce the glare of the lights,” Sam said and chuckled as he sat down across from Michael. “That’s what happens when you shave your head.”

“Ha-ha.” When the guy moved off, Michael locked gazes with Sam. “You remember what’s off limits?”

“I can’t ask you anything that may compromise national security.” Sam glanced down at the iPad resting on his lap. “That doesn’t mean I’m not going to try.”

“Sam…” [Read more…] about The Sit-Down

inner circle

This is a continuation of ‘Surrender‘

At the knock on his office door, Michael looked up from the folder on is desk. “Yes, Derrick?”

Derrick adjusted his silver-framed glasses on his conical nose. “Mr. Warren is here.”

“Please, send him in.” Michael closed the folder and moved from behind his desk, greeting the man in the navy suit in the middle of the room. “Thanks for coming, Josh,” he said as they shook hands. After the door to his office closed, he gestured Josh to sit. “Would you like a coffee or a water?”

“I’d love a coffee,” Josh said, unbuttoning his suit jacket as he dropped onto the cozy black leather sofa.

Michael crossed to the coffeemaker on the credenza behind his desk and poured two cups. He then made himself comfortable on the matching sofa opposite Josh, handing him the other mug. “You didn’t have to dress up.”

“I thought meeting the new Agency director merited a suit.” Josh simulated a toast as he brought the mug to his pinkish lips. “I hear you’re the youngest person to hold the position.” [Read more…] about The Inner Circle

Surrender

This is the sequel to ‘House of Cards‘

As Michael stared down James Coburg, burly men swarmed in and surrounded them. With his gun still drawn, he said, “Do you honestly think that, after everything that has happened, I didn’t come prepared for this?”

“Look around, Michael,” James said cavalierly. “You’ve turned one weak man against me, but these other men…” He gestured around the room. “They’re loyal to me.”

“Loyalty is one thing,” Michael shot back. “But are they prepared to die for you? Or spend the rest of their lives in jail?”

James smirked. “These men will put you down before you can even pull the trigger.”

“Maybe. But I don’t think it’s going to come to that.” Michael waited a moment, then slowly holstered his weapon. “You think that because you’re in your home, with your henchmen, that you have the upper hand?” [Read more…] about Surrender
