Best of An Unscripted Life of Words (Part I)

August 14, 2019 by Marcus Leave a Comment

I published my first blog post back in June 2009, and one theme that has resurfaced several times over the years is the idea of rest. Even though I know I should take a break — let my body rest — I don’t do it often enough. There are too many projects I want to finish (publish my third book this fall, get back to writing a new series, etc.), and between work and other life responsibilities it doesn’t always seem like there’s enough time to do it all.

So, I’m going to take a little time out. For the next two weeks, I’m going to share some of my most popular posts. Hope you enjoy them!

Changing the Script: On Writing and Sobriety

On 17 January 2018, I stopped drinking. Not because I was being pressured to. Not because I didn’t know my limit. Not because alcohol was ravaging my life. I gave it up because, like Oprah Winfrey, I had an ‘aha’ moment. Reading Winfrey’s The Wisdom of Sundays and Russ Perry’s The Sober Entrepreneur created so many aha moments that I thought I was going to suffer some type of breakdown. I couldn’t keep up with the big life questions being thrown at me. Then I ended up frustrated because I couldn’t hear the answers. [Read more…] about Best of An Unscripted Life of Words (Part I)

The Art of Not Belonging

August 7, 2019 by Marcus 2 Comments

I’ve perfected the art of not belonging.

I knew as much working my last flight to London. One thing about being a flight attendant that I like is not working with the same people every day. In theory, it minimizes the risk of drama and conflict. In reality, it’s still possible that you won’t necessarily click with every one of your colleagues. Slow it Down

July 31, 2019 by Marcus 1 Comment

Run to, and around the perimeter of, Hyde Park.

Finally, it’s crossed off my bucket list for London. You know, it wasn’t the distance from my hotel in St. John’s Wood to the entrance near Marble Arch (2.5 km) that held me back. Besides, when I get out for a run these days as I train for the Toronto Waterfront Marathon, I’m putting in a minimum of 10 km. No, it took me a long time to scratch this challenge off my bucket list because running through the streets of London terrifies me. [Read more…] about Slow it Down

Cutting Out the Noise

July 24, 2019 by Marcus 3 Comments

Chasing down big dreams, another lesson I’ve learned is this: cut out the noise.

Battling Social Media

For me, that ‘noise’ is social media — Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and e-mail. We could argue (I won’t, though) that smartphones make our lives easier. But the new norm is for us to be available 24/7. Scared we’re going to miss out on something, we’re always reaching for our phones (next time you’re outside, take a moment to observe the number of people walking with their heads down and glued to their devices). And the tendency to stay connected all the time can kill productivity. [Read more…] about Cutting Out the Noise

Will You Rise Up?

July 17, 2019 by Marcus Leave a Comment

Some things stick to you the way the goodness of Martha Stewart’s golden caramels cling to all the tiny crevasses of your teeth (here’s the recipe; my peeps rave about them when I make them à la Marcus). And since discovering it years ago, Eleanor Roosevelt’s advice has stuck to me: “You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” It’s been a compelling call to action to rise up.
